This collection includes marriage records created by and kept at the Holy Metropolis of Monemvasia and Sparta from 1835 to 1935. As every marriage needed to be licensed and blessed by the area’s Metropolitan, the Metropolis kept systematic records of the marriages in its jurisdiction.<br><br>Upon receiving a marriage application, the Metropolis would examine whether the prospective marriage was legitimate and, if so, it would issue a license. The issued licenses were then registered in an index book. MyHeritage has digitized and indexed both types of records (licenses and indexes), which in many cases complement each other. For instance, in those cases where the licenses have not been preserved, indexes provide the necessary information. Records may also include other sorts of documentation, such as the original marriage application, municipal certifications or even dowry contracts.
